The Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) is an annual bicycle stage race held in Italy with occasional excursions into other countries.
The route changes each year but the format stays the same, with at least two time trials, the Alps, including the Dolomites and the finish in Milan. Since 1931, the leader of the general classification is identified by a pink jersey (Italian: maglia rosa). The color pink was chosen because La Gazzetta dello Sport, the sports newspaper that created the Giro, was printed on pink paper.
